### Meaning

(euphemism, polite) physically disabled; having a body that cannot do some things easily, such as walking.

### In the lessons

Used, mainly in the USA, as a gentle phrase for disabled people; many disabled people now prefer plain words like «disabled» or «wheelchair user». Polite register, mainly USA.

### Examples

- The building has ramps for physically challenged visitors.
- He is physically challenged but plays wheelchair basketball.
- The sign said «parking for physically challenged drivers».
- Many people prefer «disabled» to «physically challenged».
- The school helps physically challenged pupils move around.
- She is physically challenged after an accident.

### Note

Some disabled people find it too soft or silly; «disabled person» or «person with a disability» is often better. Never use rude words for disability. Plain word: disabled.
