# pilate

proper noun (Pilate, Pontius Pilate)

«pilate» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

(Bible) Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea who questioned Jesus, found no fault in him, yet allowed him to be crucified, and then washed his hands to show he took no blame. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/pilate/#m1)

### In the lessons

In Easter lessons Pilate's story shows a leader who knows what is right but gives in to the crowd. "Washing your hands of something" (refusing responsibility) comes from this story. Christians name him in the Creed: "suffered under Pontius Pilate". Pilates (the exercise) is a different word, from a man named Joseph Pilates.

### Examples

- Pilate asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?" [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/pilate/#x1)
- Pilate said, "I find no fault in this man." [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/pilate/#x2)
- The crowd shouted, and Pilate gave in. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/pilate/#x3)
- Pilate washed his hands in front of the people. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/pilate/#x4)
- The Creed says Jesus "suffered under Pontius Pilate." [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/pilate/#x5)
- Mum does Pilates on Tuesdays — that's an exercise, not the governor! [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/pilate/#x6)

### Note

Capital P; a name. Input is lower case. Trap: Pilate (governor, said "PIE-lut") vs Pilates (exercise, said "pih-LAH-teez") vs pilot (flies a plane).
