## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah's law a pledge is the item a borrower gives to the lender, and it must be treated kindly towards the poor.

**Interpretation.** Tradition says a lender may not enter the house to take it, and must return a poor man's cloak at night. Taking a mill is forbidden because it takes his food and his life.
