## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah a pledge is an item a borrower leaves with a lender as a guarantee. The law says it must be treated gently.

**Interpretation.** The law says a poor person's cloak taken as a pledge must be returned by sunset. Tradition sees this as protecting human dignity.
