### Meaning

1. (everyday) a guest someone is allowed to bring to an event, often a partner.
2. (informal) to add oneself to a plan or agree («plus one to that»).

### In the lessons

Used on invitations and in chat about weddings and parties; it lets people invite a partner without naming them. Everyday register, all English-speaking countries.

### Examples

- Can I bring a plus-one to the wedding?
- Who's your plus-one tonight?
- The invitation says «you and a plus-one».
- I went as my sister's plus-one.
- If 20 guests each bring a plus-one, there will be 40 people.
- Plus one to pizza for dinner!

### Note

In maths, invited guests + plus-ones = guests × 2 if everyone brings one. A plus-one is a person, not a number. Plain words: guest, partner.
