### In the lessons

In maths and data lessons, children take a class poll (for example favourite fruit), then make a tally chart and bar chart. In the news, opinion polls show who might win an election. Phrases: «opinion poll», «take a poll», «exit poll», «polling station», «go to the polls».

### Note

Noun and verb, past «polled». In maths, results of a poll can be shown as numbers, fractions or percentages: 12 out of 25 is 48 per cent. A poll asks some people, not everyone, so it can be wrong. Do not confuse with «pole» (a long stick) or «Pole» (a person from Poland).

## In Jewish tradition

Counting heads in the census showed that each person counts. Priests in Ezekiel's vision were told only to poll their heads, neither shaving nor letting hair grow long, and some nations were marked by hair polled at the corners.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis noted that the half-shekel was given so that people were counted by coins and not directly. The rules on priests' hair are read as a sign of order and dignity in the Temple service.
