## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it means openly disobeying God's command. In the Psalms, "presumptuous sins" are proud, willful sins which the psalmist asks God to keep him from.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis teach that deliberate defiance is much more serious than accidental sin, and it was not covered by the usual sin-offering. The Psalm is read as a prayer to be kept from sins done on purpose.

### Examples

- So I spoke unto you, and ye hearkened not; but ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and were presumptuous, and went up into the hill-country. (Torah DEU.1.43, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/P/presumptuous/#x1)
- Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins, that they may not have dominion over me; then shall I be faultless, and I shall be clear from great transgression. (Writings PSA.19.14, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/P/presumptuous/#x2)
