## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah a prince is a chief or leader, such as the head of a tribe or a father's house, or a ruler sent by a king. In the Prophets and Writings it also means a leader of the people or a judge, and princes are often those who govern with kings.

**Interpretation.** Each tribe's prince brought offerings at the dedication of the altar, which shows the tribes' equal honor. Proverbs is read as saying that true rulers must rule with justice.
