### In the lessons

In maths money problems, profit = selling price − cost price. If the costs are bigger, there is a loss instead. At a school fair pupils work out the profit from a cake stall. In business people talk about making a profit. Phrases: make a profit, profit and loss, at a profit, profit from.

### Examples

### Note

Profit = money in − money out; a negative result is called a loss. Regular verb: profited (one t), profiting. Homophone: «prophet» (a person who foretells or speaks for God) — same sound, different meaning. In maths: «profit per item» × number of items = total profit.

## In Jewish tradition

In the Prophets and Writings it means a useful gain or benefit, not only money. Idols and lies cannot profit, treasures of wickedness profit nothing, and Ecclesiastes asks what profit a person has from all his work.

**Interpretation.** Jeremiah is read as warning that false trust in words cannot help. Proverbs teaches that righteousness saves from death when wealth cannot, and Ecclesiastes' question is read as asking what lasting worth comes from toil.
