## In Jewish tradition

Here it means to raise someone to great honor and reward. King Balak says it to the prophet Balaam when he tries to hire him. In Daniel and Esther a king raises a man to a high office.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads the story as a lesson: Balaam wanted wealth and honor, but God would let him say only what God put in his mouth. Haman's promotion is read as the start of his pride and fall.
