## In Jewish tradition

In Leviticus the priest "pronounces" a person clean or unclean. This is an official ruling after he examines a skin sign.

**Interpretation.** Tradition says only a priest could give this ruling, even if a scholar knew more. It was a ritual status and not a judgment of health or character.

### Examples

- And if it spread abroad in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a plague. (Torah LEV.13.22, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/P/pronounce/#x1)

### Note

Regular verb: pronounced. Spelling trap: the noun is «pronunciation» — no «o» after the n: pro-NUN-ciation, not «pronounciation». Not the same as «announce».
