## In Jewish tradition

To prophesy is to speak a message that God puts in the speaker's mouth. It is often a warning or comfort, not only a prediction.

**Interpretation.** The tradition holds that the prophet speaks what God commands and cannot hold it back, as Amos says. Prophecy calls the people to justice and return to God.
