### In the lessons

In history and geography lessons, prosperity grows with trade, jobs and good harvests, and falls in wars and recessions. In everyday life and festivals, people wish each other prosperity, for example at Chinese New Year and Diwali. In church life, Christians may pray for peace and prosperity. ## In Jewish tradition

Success and well-being. In the Psalms it is a wish for peace and good fortune in Jerusalem's palaces, and in Proverbs it comes to those who follow righteousness and mercy.

**Interpretation.** The verse about not seeking Ammon and Moab's "prosperity" is read by tradition as a rule about those two nations. Tradition teaches that it concerns national dealings, not hatred of individuals. The Psalm is read as a prayer for Jerusalem's peace, said by Jews to this day.
