## In Jewish tradition

Malachi pictures God as a refiner of silver who purifies the sons of Levi so that their offerings are right. The image of fire refining metal is a picture of cleansing.

**Interpretation.** The tradition reads this as a promise that the Temple service will one day be made pure. The refiner watches until the metal shows his own face.
