# python

noun (a python, pythons; Python — a programming language)

«python» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. A python is a large snake that is not venomous and kills its prey by wrapping round it and squeezing; pythons live in Africa, Asia and Australia. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/python/#m1)
2. Python (with a capital P) is a popular programming language, easy to read, used in schools and by scientists and companies. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/P/python/#m2)

### In the lessons

In science lessons pythons come up in reptiles and predators: they squeeze prey and swallow it whole, then may not eat again for weeks. In Australian lessons, carpet pythons sometimes live in roofs. In computing lessons pupils move from Scratch to Python to write real text code. The language was named after a British comedy show, not after the snake.

### Note

Plural «pythons». Capital P for the language. Trap: pythons live in Africa, Asia and Australia; the similar big snakes of the Americas are boas and anacondas. Pythons squeeze to stop breathing and blood flow, not to crush bones.
