### Meaning

1. (euphemism, everyday) a time when a child must stop playing, sit or lie down and calm down, often as a mild punishment or rest.
2. a peaceful time with no noise, for reading, resting or praying.
3. a period when it is calm and not busy, as in a shop or office.

### In the lessons

Used by parents, nursery and school staff to make a rest or a punishment sound gentle and kind; everyday, all regions. Often in "have some quiet time", "quiet time in your room".

### Examples

- After lunch the little ones have quiet time on their mats.
- "That's enough shouting, Tom. Quiet time on the beanbag for five minutes."
- Mum calls it quiet time, but we all know it means we're in trouble.
- Every evening Gran has her quiet time with a book.
- The shop has a quiet time in the middle of the afternoon.
- The teacher put on soft music for quiet time.
- The note home said: "Ella needed some quiet time after the incident at break."

### Note

It can sound kind but often means a punishment or a forced rest, like "time out". Do not confuse with "a quiet time" meaning a period with not much happening. Not a time that is literally silent everywhere.
