### In the lessons

In science, rays of sunlight travel in straight lines; X-rays let doctors see bones; ultraviolet (UV) rays from the Sun can burn skin, so we wear sunscreen. In geometry, an angle is made by two rays from the same point (the vertex). In stories, «a ray of sunshine» can mean a cheerful person. Phrases: «rays of the sun», «X-ray», «UV rays», «a ray of hope», «sting ray».

## In Jewish tradition

It means a beam of light, and the Hebrew can also mean "horns."

**Interpretation.** Habakkuk pictures God's glory as bright light with beams at his side. The tradition reads it as light that also hides his power.

### Examples

- And a brightness appeareth as the light; rays hath He at His side; and there is the hiding of His power. (Prophets HAB.3.4, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/R/ray/#x1)
