### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official) forced teaching of political ideas to people who disagree with a government, often in camps they cannot leave.
2. teaching someone again or teaching new habits, for example after an injury ("muscle re-education").

### In the lessons

Used by some governments to make prison camps and brainwashing sound like schools; news reports put it in quotation marks to show it is a euphemism. The plain sense is used in medicine and training.

### Examples

- The government sent thousands of people to so-called re-education camps.
- Reporters say "re-education" there really means prison and brainwashing.
- After the operation she needed re-education of the muscles in her hand.
- In history we read about re-education camps after the war.
- "Re-education" sounds like school, but people were not free to go home.
- Drivers caught speeding sometimes take a re-education course.

### Note

Two very different senses: a harmless re-learning course versus forced political camps. Watch the context. Spelled with a hyphen in British use, often "reeducation" in American use.
