## In Jewish tradition

Jeremiah's words were read aloud in Babylon, and a letter was read to Jeremiah. In Ezra, a letter of the king was read before the officials.

**Interpretation.** Moses reading the book of the covenant and the king reading the law before all Israel are the roots of public Torah reading. Today the Torah is read aloud in the synagogue each week. Reading the prophets' words aloud is a sign that God's message is meant to be heard.
