## In Jewish tradition

In Jeremiah, God promises to rear the orphans of those who die. Ahab reared up an altar to Baal. In Isaiah, a man will rear only a young cow and two sheep after the land is laid waste.

**Interpretation.** The Tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month, a year after the Exodus. Tradition sees it as the place for God's presence among the people. Jeremiah's words are read as God caring for the fatherless.
