## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it describes people who will not obey God, or a son who will not obey his parents. In Jeremiah, the people have a revolting and rebellious heart, and in Proverbs a rebellious person seeks only evil.

**Interpretation.** The law of the "stubborn and rebellious son" is read by the rabbis as so narrow that it almost never applied; they taught it was meant to warn and teach. Jeremiah's and Proverbs' words are read as warnings that a stubborn heart brings trouble.
