## In Jewish tradition

In Jeremiah, Israel is said to recline under every green tree, a picture of worshipping idols on high places. This is called playing the harlot, meaning being unfaithful to God.

**Interpretation.** Abraham offers his three guests a place to rest under the tree. Abraham's welcome of the travelers is held up by tradition as the model of hospitality. Jeremiah's verse is read as the opposite: people resting under trees to worship idols and leaving God.

### Examples

- For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands, and thou saidst: 'I will not transgress'; upon every high hill and under every leafy tree thou didst recline, playing the harlot.
