### Meaning

(euphemism, official) illegal drugs that people take for fun, not because they are ill, such as cannabis or ecstasy.

Used in health leaflets, news and official reports as a neutral term, softer than "illegal drugs" or "street drugs"; formal, all regions. Some say it makes drug use sound harmless, like a hobby.

### Note
