## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah to redeem is to buy back a person, field, house or animal that was sold or belongs to God, by paying its value. In the Prophets and Psalms God redeems Israel from trouble, sin and death.

**Interpretation.** The firstborn sons must be redeemed with money, called pidyon haben, and the nearest relative has a duty to redeem a family member sold into slavery; God is also said to redeem Israel from Egypt. The Psalms pray that God will redeem Israel from all troubles and sins, and tradition reads this as hope for a final redemption.
