## In Jewish tradition

In Job, people refine gold in a mine. In Jeremiah, the founder refines in vain because the wicked are not separated out. In Daniel, some wise people stumble to refine and purify others until the time of the end.

**Interpretation.** The refining of metal is a picture of testing and cleaning people. Tradition reads Daniel as meaning that hard times can purify the faithful.
