## In Jewish tradition

In Jonah, those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy. In Job, God will not regard vanity, and Job says he does not regard himself.

**Interpretation.** "Regarding not the word of the LORD" is read as ignoring God's warning; Zipporah's words about circumcision link the blood to the covenant. Job's and Jonah's words are read as showing that God pays no attention to empty things.
