# reindeer

noun (a reindeer, reindeer)

«reindeer» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. A reindeer is a deer of the cold Arctic and northern lands, with thick fur and large branched antlers; in North America wild reindeer are called caribou. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/R/reindeer/#m1)
2. In Christmas stories, reindeer pull Santa's flying sleigh, led by Rudolph with his red nose. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/R/reindeer/#m2)

### In the lessons

In science lessons reindeer come up in Arctic adaptations: thick fur, wide hooves that work like snowshoes and help dig for lichen under snow, and eyes that change colour between summer and winter. Both males and females grow antlers. In geography lessons pupils learn that the Sámi people of northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia herd reindeer. At Christmas, reindeer are in songs, cards and stories.
