### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official) fired or removed from a job.
2. literally, given a break from work so that someone else takes over.

### In the lessons

Used in news and official statements to sound calm about firing or removing someone, especially police, soldiers, coaches and managers; formal, all regions. It does not say why.

### Examples

- The captain was relieved of his duties after the accident.
- The coach was relieved of his duties after ten losses in a row.
- The officer has been relieved of his duties while the matter is investigated.
- At midnight the guard was relieved of his duties by the next soldier.

### Note

Stands for "fired" or "sacked". "Relieved" here does not mean happy or calm. Pronoun changes: his, her, their duties.
