### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official, UK) the third of four inspection grades for schools and services in England, meaning the place is not good enough.
2. generally, needs to get better.

### In the lessons

Used by UK school inspectors (Ofsted) and in school reports; the phrase sounds gentle but is a warning that the school or work is poor. Official, UK.

### Examples

- The inspectors rated the school as requires improvement.
- After the visit the school was graded requires improvement.
- Your handwriting requires improvement, Max.

### Note

In England it replaced the older grade "satisfactory". Stands for "not good enough". In ranking problems it comes after outstanding and good, before inadequate.
