## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it usually means paying back evil, as when Joseph's brothers fear he will take revenge.

**Interpretation.** Jewish tradition reads Joseph's forgiveness as a model of not taking revenge, and Moses' question shows God's goodness is not to be repaid with ingratitude.
