### In the lessons

In news and everyday life, a manager or politician «resigns» after a problem. In formal letters people write «I wish to resign from my post». In chess club, a player resigns when they know they will lose. Phrases: resign from, resign as, resign yourself to, be resigned to.

Regular verb; the g is silent: say ri-ZINE. The noun is «resignation». «Resigned» as an adjective means accepting something sadly. Do not confuse with «re-sign» (sign again, as a football player re-signs for a club).

## In Jewish tradition

In Psalms it means to give yourself over calmly to God and wait for Him.

**Interpretation.** Tradition reads this as trust in God, being quiet and patient instead of angry when the wicked seem to succeed.
