### Meaning

1. (euphemism, official) a group of homes, flats or a village only for older people, often with care and activities.
2. a place where many retired people live.

### In the lessons

Used by builders, advertisers and families to describe housing for old people in a friendly, upbeat way, avoiding "old people's home"; official and polite, all regions, especially US.

### Examples

- Grandma moved to a retirement community near the sea.
- The retirement community has a pool and a library.
- We visited Granddad at his retirement community on the weekend.
- "It's not an old people's home, it's a retirement community," Nan insisted.
- Residents of the retirement community must be over fifty-five.
- Our class sang carols at the retirement community.

### Note

Stands for "housing for old people". Not the same as a care home or nursing home, where people need lots of medical help, though some communities include care. In maths problems, ages and numbers of residents often appear.
