## In Jewish tradition

Reuben was Jacob's oldest son, who gave his name to the tribe of Reuben. His tribe settled east of the Jordan.

**Interpretation.** Tradition remembers Reuben as the firstborn who lost his leading place because of a wrong he did. It also remembers that he tried to save Joseph from his brothers.
