## In Jewish tradition

In the Torah it can mean a swelling on the skin, or "sun-rising" meaning the east. In the Prophets and Writings "rising up" means getting up, and the "rising" of light means the shining of dawn.

**Interpretation.** Rabbis treated skin swellings as signs to be examined by the priest. The east, where the sun rises, is also the direction of the Land of Israel from Babylon. Isaiah's "brightness of thy rising" is read as the light of God shining on Zion and drawing the nations.
