# roadhog

noun (a roadhog, roadhogs; also «road hog»)

«roadhog» in the English dictionary: everyday — its meanings, how the lessons use it, and examples, each with its tree on Mova.

## Everyday

1. A driver who drives selfishly and dangerously, too fast or taking up too much of the road so others cannot pass. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/R/roadhog/#m1)
2. More loosely, anyone (also a cyclist) who acts as if the road belongs to them. [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/school/R/roadhog/#m2)

### In the lessons

In The Wind in the Willows Toad becomes a roadhog after he falls in love with motor cars: he drives wildly, crashes cars, and is called a «road-hog» and worse at his trial. Early motorists in the 1900s were often blamed for frightening horses and people. For safety lessons: a roadhog ignores other road users; good drivers share the road. A hog is a pig, so the word calls the driver greedy like a pig.
