### Meaning

1. (euphemism, polite) the work or result is not good enough; it could be much better.
2. literally, a chance or space to do better.

### In the lessons

Used in school reports, feedback and reviews to criticise kindly; polite, all regions. Teachers often write "there is room for improvement".

### Examples

- Your spelling is good, but there is room for improvement in your handwriting.
- The report said "room for improvement" next to maths.
- "Room for improvement" means the cake was burnt, love.
- There is always room for improvement, even for champions.
- The new bus service still has lots of room for improvement.
- Dad read my report and said, "Plenty of room for improvement, then."

### Note

It sounds gentle but often means "poor". Uncountable "room" here means space or chance, not a room in a house. "Plenty of room for improvement" is stronger criticism.
