In science lessons the saguaro shows how desert plants survive: its pleated stem swells to store water after rain, its spines protect it, and birds such as woodpeckers and elf owls nest in holes in it. It grows very slowly and can live 150 to 200 years. Phrases: saguaro cactus, Saguaro National Park.
