### Note

"Sea" sounds like "see" (with your eyes) — homophones. Seas are usually smaller than oceans. Do not drink sea water; it makes you more thirsty.

## In Jewish tradition

The Red Sea is the sea that split for Israel. In the food laws it is the place where fish with fins and scales live. In Solomon's Temple the "sea" was a huge bronze basin for the priests' washing, set on twelve oxen. In Job and Isaiah the sea is also a wild place of springs and depths.

**Interpretation.** The rabbis tell that the sea parted for Israel, and the event is remembered each day in prayer and especially at Passover. The twelve oxen under the bronze sea are read as standing for the twelve tribes.
