### Meaning

(euphemism, polite, official) an old person, especially one who has retired, often over sixty or sixty-five.

### In the lessons

Used in official notices, shops and transport to name old people respectfully, avoiding "old"; polite, all regions, especially US and UK. Discounts are often for "seniors".

### Examples

- Senior citizens travel free on the bus.
- The cinema offers cheap tickets for senior citizens.
- Our class wrote letters to senior citizens in the care home.
- Gran says she's not old, she's a senior citizen.
- The club runs dance classes for senior citizens.
- "Two adults and one senior, please," said Dad at the zoo.

### Note

Stands for "old person". In maths problems it often gives a discount price: an adult ticket costs 10 dollars, a senior citizen ticket costs 6. "Senior" alone can also mean older students (US school seniors).
