### In the lessons

Maths: a number series (2, 4, 6, 8) — find the rule and the next number; a series of steps. Reading: a book series like a set of adventure books. Science: bulbs in series in a circuit (if one breaks, all go out). Everyday: a series of events, a TV series.

### Examples

### Note

«Series» is the same in singular and plural: one series, two series. A series is a total of items in order; in number series look for the rule (add 2, double, ...). Trap: do not write «serie». In a circuit, «series» is the opposite of «parallel».

## In Jewish tradition

Here it is used for the long chain of numbers or letters, which the Sefer Yetzirah uses to show how the world grew out of one.

**Interpretation.** Commentators read the numbers and the letters in order as the steps by which God's creative word became more and more concrete, starting from the One.

### Examples

- 11) As the infinite series of numbers starts from one unit, so was the whole Universe formed a unity, that centres in the Godhead. (Sefer Yetzirah, Kalisch 1877) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/S/series/#x1)
- 27) The author endeavors to show how the creative divine word became more condensed and how a new series of productions came out of three elements. (Sefer Yetzirah, Kalisch 1877) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/S/series/#x2)
- He combined, weighed and changed : the א with all the other letters in succession, and all the others again with א; ב with all, and all again with ב; and so the whole series of letters. (Sefer Yetzirah, Kalisch 1877) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/S/series/#x3)

### Note

«Series» is the same in singular and plural: one series, two series. A series is a total of items in order; in number series look for the rule (add 2, double, ...). Trap: do not write «serie». In a circuit, «series» is the opposite of «parallel».
