### Meaning

1. an extra amount added to a bill, especially in a restaurant, for the service.
2. (euphemism) an extra fee with a polite name, often not optional in practice.
3. a fee flat owners pay for repairs and cleaning of a building.

### In the lessons

Used on bills and menus; sometimes a soft name for a fee people would complain about. Official, UK and all regions.

### Examples

- A service charge of 12.5 percent will be added to your bill.
- The ticket cost more because of the service charge.
- Mum asked to remove the service charge because the food was cold.
- The flat has a service charge for cleaning the stairs.
- "A service charge? I only bought a cinema ticket online!"
- Is the service charge included in the price?

### Note

In maths problems, find the service charge as a percentage of the bill and add it: a 40 pound meal with a 10 percent service charge costs 44 pounds. It is not always a tip for the staff.
