### Meaning

1. literally, a baby born early, after only about seven months instead of nine.
2. (euphemism, old-fashioned) a baby born about seven months after a wedding, with people pretending it came early to hide that the parents married because a baby was on the way.

### In the lessons

Old-fashioned family gossip; the euphemism protected a family's reputation. Old-fashioned, all regions. The literal sense is still used in medicine.

### Examples

- My uncle was a seven-month baby and spent weeks in hospital.
- Granny smiled and said Aunt Rose was a "seven-month baby", and the aunties winked.
- Seven-month babies need extra warmth and care.
- In the old novel, everyone counted the months and whispered about the seven-month baby.
- Doctors call it a premature baby now.
- "A seven-month baby, and over four kilos!" laughed the gossips.

### Note

Two senses: a really premature baby, or a gossip euphemism. In maths: nine months minus seven months means two months early.
