### In the lessons

In stories and maths word problems Shay is usually just a character's name: «Shay ran 3 km.» In old poems and history books a «shay» is a carriage, as in the poem «The Deacon's Masterpiece, or the Wonderful One-Hoss Shay». It is not a common everyday English word today.

### Note

As a name, write it with a capital S: Shay. Pronounced «shay», rhyming with «day». The carriage meaning is old and rare. Do not confuse with «Shea» or «Shae», other spellings of names, or with «chez» (French for «at the home of»).
