### In the lessons

In science, the shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint, so your arm can move in a circle. In everyday life you carry a bag on your shoulder (two straps are better for your back), shrug your shoulders when you don't know, and tap someone on the shoulder to get their attention. In feelings, «a shoulder to cry on» is someone who comforts you. «Shoulder to shoulder» means side by side. On roads, the shoulder is not for walking or playing.

## In Jewish tradition

The high priest's ephod had shoulder-pieces with two onyx stones carrying the names of the tribes. The tradition sees this as the priest carrying Israel on his shoulders. The shoulder is also where burdens are carried, so lifting a burden from the shoulder means freeing someone from slavery or hard labour.

**Interpretation.** The tradition reads the shoulder as the place of carrying responsibility. It reads "I removed his shoulder from the burden" as God freeing Israel from Egypt.
