## In Jewish tradition

Job and Lamentations use it for a body wasted by suffering or hunger, with skin drawn tight on the bones.

**Interpretation.** Job reads it as his suffering becoming a "witness" against him, which his friends took as proof of guilt. Lamentations shows the starving people of Jerusalem after the city fell.

### Examples

- And Thou hast shrivelled me up, which is a witness against me; and my leanness riseth up against me, it testifieth to my face. (Writings JOB.16.8, JPS 1917) [tree →](https://mova.elamur.ai/free/en/corpora/dictionaries/judaism/S/shrivelled/#x1)
