### In the lessons

In everyday life and safety: shut the gate so the dog can't run into the road, shut the fridge door, keep fire doors shut, and shut doors at night to slow a fire. Shops shut at certain times (maths problems use opening and closing times). «Shut up» means stop talking, but it is rude; say «Please be quiet». «Shut down» means turn off a computer or close a business. «Shut your eyes» is used in games and at bedtime.

## In Jewish tradition

To shut is to close a door, and also to shut someone in, such as a person with a plague. In poems it is a figure of speech: shutting up compassion means holding it back, and shutting the heart means being hard and proud.

**Interpretation.** The tradition reads "Hath He in anger shut up His compassions?" as the worry of a sufferer, not as fact about God. It teaches that God's mercy stays open to those who return to Him.
