## In Jewish tradition

In the Tanakh sitting also means staying in a place, such as David's men hiding in a cave or Ehud's king in his cool chamber. "Sitting down and rising up" is a way of saying everything a person does.

**Interpretation.** The tradition reads "their sitting down and their rising up" in Lamentations as God watching all the actions of the people, even when enemies mock them.
