## In Jewish tradition

In the Tabernacle, the sockets were the silver (and copper) bases with holes in which the boards and pillars stood firmly. In the Song of Songs the beloved's legs are likened to pillars of marble set on sockets of fine gold, a picture of strength and beauty.

**Interpretation.** Tradition says the silver sockets were made from the half-shekel given by each Israelite, so everyone had a share in holding up the Tabernacle. The rabbis read the Song of Songs as a love song between God and Israel.
