Opposite: northern. Pronounced "SUTH-ern" (like "mother"), not like "south". Capital S when part of a name: the Southern Ocean, the Southern Hemisphere. When it is winter in the northern half of the world, it is summer in the southern half.

## In Jewish tradition

Interpretation: In Sefer Yetzirah it names the borders of space. The "Upper-Southern" and "Lower-Southern" borders are two of the twelve diagonal borders, which tradition links to the twelve months and the twelve tribes.
