### Meaning

(euphemism, official) a war or invasion called by a softer, limited-sounding name by the government starting it.

### In the lessons

Used by a government to avoid the word "war"; news in other countries put it in quotation marks to show it is a euphemism. Official, all regions.

### Examples

- The government called the invasion a "special military operation".
- Many reporters said the special military operation was really a war.
- In class we discussed how leaders use phrases like special military operation.
- "It's a war, whatever they call it," said our teacher.
- The phrase special military operation hides the scale of the fighting.
- Some people were punished for calling it a war instead.

### Note

Stands for "war". A classic example of propaganda language. Quotation marks around it in writing show doubt.
